Melbourne Town Hall situated at the corner of Swanston and Collins Streets, has dramatically enhanced their event offerings through a significant technological upgrade led by Scene Change, the venue’s newly appointed in-house technology provider. This upgrade comes on the heels of the City of Melbourne’s decision to designate Showtime Event Group as the venue’s catering and management partner in April 2024.
The upgrade includes the installation of over 100 advanced lighting fixtures, a concert-level sound system in the main hall, and cutting-edge LED screens.
“We are honoured to be given the responsibility of managing such a prestigious Melbourne landmark,” says Andrew Delaney, Director of Scene Change Melbourne. “Our audiovisual design was meticulously planned to integrate seamlessly with the venue’s historic charm.”
Melbourne Town Hall has been a cornerstone of the city’s cultural scene since 1867. For those seeking a venue with rich heritage in the heart of Melbourne, this is the place to be. The venue boasts opulent chandeliers, towering ceilings, and the largest operational pipe organ in the southern hemisphere.
The Main Hall is perfect for hosting luncheons or dinners for groups ranging from 300 to 700 guests. It can also host up to 1,500 attendees for cocktail receptions or 2,000 for seminars. The Melbourne Room, ideal for exclusive VIP dinners, is home to a piano once played by John Lennon during the Beatles’ visit to the city. This room has also been graced by the Queen, with the antique silverware from that visit still proudly displayed. Furnished with valuable antiques and rich wooden finishes, this room remains in use by the Lord Mayor to host distinguished international guests. Additionally, there are several smaller rooms available for more intimate gatherings or meetings.
The newly installed technology has been carefully designed to complement Melbourne Town Hall’s historic architecture and the distinctive layout of its rooms. The lighting setup makes use of the entire venue, from the floor and stalls to the impressive Grand Organ.
“This is a complete production-grade setup, not just a standard AV company installation,” Delaney notes. “We frequently collaborate with leading production companies, so we’ve ensured that the gear we’ve installed is of the highest professional standard, giving incoming technical directors confidence in its reliability.”
Designed for quick setup and minimal risk, the equipment is permanently rigged to the ceiling, with modular control stations that can be easily positioned and connected.
Showtime Event Group and Scene Change are excited to infuse these iconic spaces with their own signature style, respecting the venue’s storied past while bringing it into the modern era as a premier event location.
